Taking Bollywood seriously

"A Little Song, A Little Dance: Taking Bollywood Seriously," an event sponsored by the Center for Asian Studies on Wednesday, April 19, helped portray song and dance sequences as more than just entertainment.

Arnab Chakladar, an assistant professor of English and comparative literature, examined the representation of Western and Indian cultures in the singing and dancing of Bollywood films during his lecture.

"This aspect of Bombay cinema is usually taken as the most frivolous attraction," he said.

According to Chakladar, Americans commonly misconstrue Bollywood as encompassing all of Indian cinema, but the term Bollywood is specific to films made in Bombay....read more
